Pentrich War Dead 1914 - 1919

“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. ”

The memorial to those from the parish of Pentrich who gave thier life during the great war is a simple cross which is located in the church yard next to Main Road. The names on this monument relate to the Arthur and Albert Filsell together with Cyril Towleson but a more comprehensive list can be found below.

FILSELL ALBERT Private 10581 Royal Welsh Fusiliers 1st Bn age 21 died 30/10/1914. Son of Joseph and Mary Ellen Filsell, of Pentrich, Ripley, Derby

FILSELL ARTHUR Stoker 1st Class Royal Navy K/2396 H.M.S. "Queen Mary." age 29 died 31/05/1916. Son of Joseph and Mary Ellen Filsell, of Pentrich, Ripley, Derby

WINTHROP-SMITH BERNARD RIDLEY Captain Scots Guards 1st Bn age 31 died 15/11/1914. Son of Francis N. Smith, of Wingfield Park, Ambergate, Derbys.

TOWLSON CYRIL HOWARTH Lance Corporal WR/502126 Royal Engineers Inland Water Transport age 26 died 07/09/1918. Son of Arthur John and Eliza Ann Towlson, of Pentrich, Derbyshire
